About Our Workshop

The Byberg Preaching Workshop is dedicated to developing the preaching skills of ELCA and their ecumenical partner preachers in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. We have traditionally done this through a three-day, two-night workshop held n Seaside, Oregon.

Workshop registration is also open to any preacher looking to improve their preaching.

The Byberg Preaching Workshop committee is comprised of representative from Region One of the ELCA.

Oregon Synod: Sara Gross-Samuelson, Janine Goodrich, Joseph Medley, and Bishop Laurie Larson Caesar

Southwest Washington Synod: Eric Utto-Galarneau (Treasurer)

Northwest Washington Synod: Tor Berg (Chair) and Tim Oleson (Secretary)

Northwest Intermountain Synod: Mark Behrendt

Workshop History:

Jonas J. Byberg a citizen on Silverton Oregon and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, left a bequest to establish the Byberg Homiletics Fund. This fund was to be used to create workshops to develop better preaching skills. Jonas was an inventor of farm machinery and was a manufacturer. He bequeathed property to the American Lutheran Church to establish the Fund. The fund has subsidized annual workshops since 1992.

Further donations are welcomed and encouraged, and can be sent to:
